Ovince Saint Preux was victorious in the main event of UFC Japan from the Saitama Super Arena on Friday, securing a Von Flue choke on Yushin Okami in the first round of their bout. It’s Saint Preux’s third Von Flue choke finish in the promotion, a pretty remarkable showing.
He was originally scheduled to face Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in the main event, but that fight was scrapped due to an injury. Instead he faced Okami, who is making his second stint in the UFC since his last bout with the promotion in 2013. Okami was the heavy underdog and that showed on Friday, as Saint Preux cruised to a victory.
In the co-feature, Jéssica Andrade put together a dominant performance against Cláudia Gadelha in a women’s strawweight bout. The first round was close, but Andrade took over in the second and arguably secured a 10-8 round in the third. She won by unanimous decision, 30-25, 30-26, 30-27.
Andrade’s last fight was for the UFC Women’s Strawweight Championship against Joanna Jędrzejczyk. She struggled in that bout, but is now back in the win column as she makes a bid back into the title picture. Jędrzejczyk is 14-0 and one of the most dominant champions in the promotion.
Earlier on the main card, legendary Japanese fighter Takanori Gomi was unable to get back in the win column against Dong Hyun Kim. Gomi lost the lightweight bout by first-round TKO. Prior to that, Tokhan Saki bested Henrique da Silva with a first-round knockout punch that came with just 15 seconds to go in the round.
A main card bout between Charles Rosa and Mizuto Hirota was cancelled following weight cutting complications with Hirota, bumping the flyweight bout between Jussier Formiga and Ulka Sasaki onto the main card. Formiga finished Sasaki with a rear-naked choke in the opening round.
