The Shockers and Flyers meet in an exciting day 2 match up
The Dayton Flyers and the Wichita State Shockers will meet each other in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Friday. The Flyers are the seventh-seeded team in the South region, while the Shockers enter as the 10th seed.
Dayton enters the big dance coming off a disappointing first-round loss against the Davidson Wildcats in the Atlantic 10 tournament. Their 15-3 conference record led them to a regular season title, but they were unable to make any sort of noise during the tournament. The Flyers are on a two-game skid, not having won a game since their March 1 match up against VCU.
Wichita State spent most of its season on the bubble. The Shockers battled rival Illinois State throughout the season for the conference’s top spot, and ended up tied at the top with identical 17-1 records within the Missouri Valley Conference. They met in the finals of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament, and the Shockers blew them out for a definitive 20-point victory and booked their ticket into the NCAA tournament.
The only previous meeting between the two teams was all the way back in 1962, when Dayton beat the Shockers, 79-71. They meet for the second time ever Friday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indiana. The winner will take on the winner between Kentucky and Northern Kentucky on Saturday.
