The Utah Utes and BYU Cougars always manage to play close, exciting games when they meet for their Holy War rivalry. We’ll see if that trend continues Saturday at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah. You can watch the broadcast on ESPN (live stream on WatchESPN) at 10:15 p.m. ET.
Utah has taken the last six games in the series, but most of those were extremely close. The last time was a 20-19 victory for Utah a season ago, with BYU last getting the win back in 2009.
BYU is in sore need of a high-profile win after starting the season 1-1, including a win over Portland State and an embarrassing 27-0 loss at the hands of LSU. They were expected to be at least a little more competitive in that game, but offensively couldn’t get anything done.
Utah, on the other hand, has looked good on the offensive side of the ball, especially in a 37-16 win over North Dakota in their last outing.

Utah vs. BYU news:
- Utah, with their win and no losses, surprisingly opened as slight underdogs to BYU. They looked good in their win while BYU looked bad in both their win and loss, but Vegas has its own rules.
- Tyler Huntley spoke about the BYU rivalry and how it’s changed throughout the years:
“It is still very intense. Two things that happened that really changed the feel of it in a lot of ways was that we are no longer in the same conference and now we play earlier in the season instead of having that build up all season long to the last game of the year. So, I think that it definitely has a different feel from a coaching standpoint, but there are still players on both teams that know each other and played against each other in high school, so it is every bit as intense. The fan situation is pretty similar, I can’t speak for the fans, but it seems to still be generating the excitement that it always has.”
Following the loss to LSU, BYU coach Kalani Sitake talked a lot about the team’s issues on the offensive side of the ball, and a little bit on the rivalry with Utah.
Utah vs. BYU prediction:
Saturday’s game may show Utah as slight underdogs to BYU in Vegas, and that could have a lot to do with the history between these two teams. But it’s a game that Utah really should win, and should win handily. Then again, they’ve barely scraped by against BYU in the same situations in the past.
