Argentina will battle the altitude in Bolivia on Tuesday.

A four-game winless run put Argentina’s World Cup qualification hopes under serious threat, though back-to-back victories over Colombia and Chile have enabled them to move up into a provisional spot at Russia 2018. They’ll be hoping to maintain their momentum on Tuesday, when they travel to a Bolivia side that have won just two of their 13 qualifying games.

Though Argentina are doubtless favourites, with Bolivia’s hopes of qualifying for the World Cup already all but over, the game could prove more difficult for Edgardo Bauza’s men than you’d expect. The altitude in La Paz makes it very difficult for opposing teams to play there, with Bolivia memorably smashing Argentina 6-1 at home in a World Cup qualification game in 2009.

Three big things to know

1. Argentina have won four straight games against Bolivia without conceding a single goal. However, they’ve won only one of their last four matches away in La Paz, including the aforementioned defeat back in 2009. In South America, home advantage is particularly important.

2. Argentina have made it to every World Cup since 1974, though this current qualification campaign has been more nervy than most. They still have problems on and off the field, and relied on a Lionel Messi penalty to see off Chile 1-0 last week.

3. In contrast to Argentina, Bolivia’s appearances at World Cups have been few and far between. They were one of the sides at the inaugural tournament back in 1930, but didn’t appear again until 1950. Their third and final appearance at international football’s biggest tournament came in 1994, where they were once again eliminated without winning a game.
