All hope is not lost for Napoli heading into the second leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie with Real Madrid, but it’s fair to say that a big chunk of it is. The Italian outfit netted an away goal at the Bernabéu last month, but went on to concede thrice after Lorenzo Insigne’s early opener. They’ll have to produce one of the greatest results in their history to make it into the quarterfinals.
The Neapolitans’ task is made even more difficult by their recent rocky form. They’ve won just three of their last six matches, though will be feeling slightly better after winning away at domestic rivals AS Roma on the weekend. They may also take heart from Madrid’s shaky defensive record: Zinedine Zidane’s side have kept just four clean sheets since the start of the calendar year.

Three big things to know
1. Napoli are waiting nervously on the fitness of Dries Mertens, who netted both goals in the win over Roma on the weekend. He was substituted midway through the second half with a calf problem, though could yet make Maurizio Sarri’s starting lineup.
2. Madrid’s only certain absentee is defender Raphaël Varane; they are otherwise expected to have a full-strength team available.
3. Real Madrid last visited the San Paolo back in 1987, when Napoli were captained by the legendary Diego Maradona. However, not even the Argentine playmaker was able to stop Madrid triumphing 3-1 on aggregate after a 1-1 draw in the second leg in Naples.
