Southampton forward Manolo Gabbiadini will have mixed feelings after Sunday’s EFL Cup final.
Gabbiadini scored a brace that so nearly earned Southampton their first trophy since 1979. Ultimately, Southampton lost 3-2, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic scoring the winner minutes from time.
The Italian could’ve – and probably should’ve – had a Wembley hat-trick after his first half goal was incorrectly disallowed for offside.
The decision re-sparked debate in the football world about technology for offside decisions.
“When a character like Mourinho comes at you, shakes your hand and says, ‘You did a great job, you scored two goals of a real champion”, you feel something special,” Gabbiadini told Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Mourinho is a special person, and not only for his successes as a manager. He is charismatic,” Gabbiadini added.
Gabbiadini has been a revelation since signing from Napoli in January. The 25-year-old has scored five goals in his three appearances for the Saints in all competitions.
