South America’s World Cup qualification pacesetters clash in Uruguay on Thursday.

Brazil will look to maintain their fine World Cup qualification form on Thursday, but that could prove easier said than done. Tite’s men have now won six competitive games on the bounce and have moved four points clear at the top of the group, but could find life difficult away at an on-form Uruguay.

Oscar Tabárez’s side sit just a place behind Brazil in the table, and would move within a point with a victory. After a difficult few years, they appear to be back to somewhere near the best, with their defeat to Chile last time out ending a four-game unbeaten streak. Things are so tight in CONMEBOL qualification that they can’t afford to ease up yet, and they’ll be gunning for all three points.

Three big things to know

1. These sides drew 2-2 in the reverse fixture last March, with Uruguay pulling back from two goals down in Recife courtesy of goals from Edinson Cavani and Luis Suárez. Not since 2001 have Uruguay managed to beat Brazil.

2. Brazil will be without winger Douglas Costa and striker Gabriel Jesus, who both picked up injuries with domestic sides Bayern Munich and Manchester City, respectively. However, Neymar, Roberto Firmino, and Philippe Coutinho should provide ample firepower up top.

3. Uruguay will be banking on a big performance from Cavani, who is the top scorer in South American qualification. He’s found the back of the net eight times so far, twice more than anyone else.
