Argentina and Chile are on the bottom end of the qualifying teams for the 2018 World Cup out of South America, and both want to find a way to climb further up the table.

With all the rampant talent of Argentina and all the stunning competitive success of Chile in recent years, it’s been something of a surprise to watch two of the greatest powers of South America struggle their way through much of the World Cup qualifying cycle. If qualifying ended today, only Chile would advance to Russia in 2018 as the final guaranteed CONMEBOL team, with Argentina bound to a play-off match against a team from the Oceania region. That’s not where either of these teams want to be, adding even more importance than a duel between them would normally hold.

Adding further electricity and importance to this matchup is the fact that these two teams faced off in the last two Copa America finals, with Chile coming out the victors each time. That’s something that’s stuck in the craw of La Albiceleste and something they’ll be eager to make right — and if it comes at the cost of Chile’s World Cup qualification hopes, all the better.

Of course, Juan Antonio Pizzi isn’t one to back down from any challenge, and his squad will be more than ready to face the challenge of playing Argentina in a hostile atmosphere in Buenos Aires. A win for Chile here would give them significantly better security in their standings in the qualifying table — and getting one over on Argentina again would take an already sweet win for La Roja and make it something truly memorable.
